![]() ![]() (Image credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images) It's the little things This choice of closer is particularly eerie in the wake of Layne Staley's death. Alice in Chains play some of their greatest hits (including Rooster and Would?) and even throw in a brand new, never released song – the finale, Killer Is Me. The set was compiled like an album, which is likely why the record itself, when it was released on CD format, became such a big hit with audiences.įollowing Nutshell, the band move into Brother and then No Excuses – a song that just lends itself to the acoustic format. The lyrics "We face the path of time/And yet I fight/And yet I fight/This battle all alone/No one to cry to/No place to call home" are so much more soul-stirring when placed up against the tranquility of the intimate setting and calmer-paced melody, and opening with this hopelessness and despair is all the more heartbreaking.Īlice In Chains prepared the entire show ahead of time, with the specifications of MTV Unplugged in mind, creating a set list that balances more energetic tracks with solemn, tenser songs. Every word resonates and Staley and Cantrell's raw, signature harmonies with no accompaniment will chill you to the core. While we were all aware of Staley's battle against addiction (there were many rumours circulating about his decline in health, which only became worse after the band's hiatus) and while AIC's lyrics had never shied way from the bleak reality of his relationship with drugs they become all the more stark and impactful when crooned alongside the strums of an acoustic guitar. Staley immediately starts singing it as he takes a seat, without any perceived warning but somehow seamlessly matching with guitarist Jerry Cantrell's strumming. If a band can start a show, an MTV live show aired on international television, with an album track you know they're something special. Opening with Nutshell – taken from Alice In Chains' third studio EP Jar Of Flies – the track has become a staple of 90s grunge, despite never being released as a single. Every song transforms from a powerful, angry and forceful catharsis to a frustrated and haunting lament. If you were to know nothing about the band prior to listening, odds are you'd still come away moved.ĪIC's down-tuned sludgy heavy metal somehow lends itself to the acoustic format. ![]() It's not just the tragic backstory that makes Alice In Chains Unplugged a poignant piece of work, the tracks themselves are what make it a truly formidable live record. (Image credit: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images) Acoustic Alice in Chains is nothing short of haunting "I wish I could just hug you all, but I'm not gonna," Staley proclaims at the end of the record – and we wish we could hug you right back, Layne. The album understandably garnered a resurgence of recognition after the death of Staley, with many media outlets – even those who had given the album initially scathing reviews – praising the power of performance despite his condition at the time. His once glowing, cheeky grin is replaced by a morose, pained half-smile, but nevertheless, his sense of humour is still prevalent and he immediately belts out Nutshell and continues to give a strong vocal performance throughout – a testament to his sheer natural talent. Sunglasses disguise his blackened eyes, long sleeves cover scars left behind from shooting up and he awkwardly clutches his hands together as if afraid to emerge from the shadows and take centre stage – quite different from the powerful vocalist we'd come to know and love. The original performance is therefore a chilling look at the tragic downfall of one of rock's most charismatic and enigmatic frontmen from glam rock loving metal star to the epitome of grunge – in the most negative sense of the word: a bedraggled junkie with scruffy pink hair awkwardly shuffles from the back of the stage and takes his seat. Staley overdosed following their concert in Kansas City on July 3 and despite the frontman recovering from the incident AIC were put on hiatus, and other than one brief recording two years later, where the band briefly reunited to record the songs Get Born Again and Died for Music Bank, Alice in Chains never played with Staley again. His final ever performance was in the same year, when Alice in Chains replaced Stone Temple Pilots in an opening slot for the newly reunited Kiss. Alice in Chains Unplugged marked the second to last performance from Staley, who was battling a crippling addiction to heroin that was poignantly chronicled through the band's dark and agonising lyrics.

In past "Mark Isham" has created thrilling and exciting music for his films and "Point Break" is no exception. "Reeves" gives the audience a calm performance instead of a strong and angry performance, as he should. It doesn't feel like "Keanu Reeves" is truly giving one hundred percent to his role as "Utah". "Keanu Reeves" isn't one of "Hollywood's" best actors in fact he receives a lot of hate for this. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze star in this nonstop action thriller about an FBI agent lured by the rush when he goes undercover to unmask a band of thrill-seeking surfers who rob banks to fund their addiction to pulling off the most daring score, surviving the greatest danger. Constructed with an alarming amount of real footage. A Gen Z update to Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 cult classic, this remake is essentially an episode of Fast and Furious in which the vehicular exploits have been replaced with an assortment of extreme sports sequences. The film's climax is actually disappointing as it is unentertaining due to the unsatisfactory justice of the antagonist. Point Break (2015) Impressive action sequences let down by almost everything else. The action sequences are extremely entertaining to watch, they make it look like "Utah"" is truly about to get hurt. As a general rule of thumb, plan on 7 to 8 minutes per 1/2 inch of thickness for pork chops baked at 400 degrees F. Add water to Crock-Pot and mix in both packages of dry onion soup mix. Cook until well browned but still rosy near the bone, 4 to 5 minutes per side for bone-in pork chops that are 8 ounces each. ![]() When the oil begins to shimmer, add the pork chops to the pan, making sure there is an inch between each, so they sear and don’t steam from overcrowding. Pork loin is a large cut of meat from the back of the pig, and pork chops cut from pork loin have a delicious flavor. Add olive oil or neutral oil to the hot skillet. Heat a heavy skillet like cast iron or stainless steel over medium-high heat. Season them all over with salt and pepper or salt and pepper mixed with a blend of spices. If you choose thin, bone-in chops, they will cook in just the amount of time it takes to brown them. If you cook them entirely on the stove, they'll be dry, so finish them in the oven until they reach 145 degrees F. Thick chops may take longer to cook than to brown. They can also be baked longer than the other pork chops cuts, with an internal temp going up to 165 degrees F. If you want to really cook a pork chop to perfection, however, the basic recipe below will produce perfect results every time.Īpple is one of the most common pairings with pork, and for good reason. Our rosemary and sage brine or Sichuan peppercorn brine are both recommended with pork. You can also add aromatics at this stage if you’re looking for a particular flavour. Half an hour will do the trick, but feel free to leave them brining for a couple of hours for maximum effectiveness. Cook the pork chops for 3-4 minutes on each side, or. For the most even seasoning, spread the pork chops in a single layer and sprinkle the salt and pepper back and forth over the chops from about. Once the pan is hot, and the chops, 2 tablespoons butter, and 2-3 sprigs of fresh thyme to the skillet. The brining in the video above is also optional, but if you have the time, a quick brine ensures a juicy, tender chop with even seasoning throughout. Reach for 1 teaspoon kosher salt per 1 pound of meat. If you tend to avoid eating the fat anyway, then take a look at the video above, which demonstrates a quicker method of cooking pork chops. If the chop is too thin, the meat will overcook and dry out whilst the fat is rendering (which can take up to 20 minutes). Using tongs, transfer the pork chops to a plate or clean baking dish. When the thermometer reads 140° to 145☏, remove the skillet from the oven. The once-held notion that all pork should be cooked to 160☏ until it’s beige throughout has pretty much disappeared. Check the temperature of the pork at 5 minutes, being careful to not overcook the pork. This is because the fat needs time to render down to get that lovely golden crust, otherwise you get a mouthful of hard, flabby, tasteless fat (which is often left on the plate). Bake the pork chops until cooked through (140° to 145☏), about 9 to 12 minutes. You’ll often find paltry 1cm-thin chops in supermarkets – avoid these, and don’t settle for anything less than 1-inch thick chops – centre-cut is best. Cooking on the bone will also infuse the chop with more delicious porky flavour. Choose a bone-in chop – this will help prevent the pork from drying out, which is a common problem with pork chops. Look out for specialist breeds such as Tamworth or Saddleback for something really special. As with any meat or fish, selecting high quality, free-range pork chops is always going to give you the tastiest result. 8/16/2023 0 Comments Edwin l drake friends![]() Townsend's company fired him, and he lost his money on Wall Street. Rockefeller, a careful businessman who would use crafty tactics to build one of America's great industrial fortunes. Within a few years the oil refining business would attract John D. Real estate prices skyrocketed and fortune-seekers arrived. New Industry, New Wealth By early fall, Pennsylvania's Oil Rush was on. Drake at last struck black gold, on August 28, 1859, nearly seventy feet down. The men drilled, and drilled, and drilled. When water flooded the hole, Drake innovated a solution he drove an iron pipe down to bedrock, then placed the drill inside the pipe to keep water out of the excavated shaft. Oil Workmen drilled all summer, six days a week, with the Sabbath Drake's inviolable day off. They built a derrick of pine wood and began drilling. He had seen a Yale chemistry professor's report that rock oil could be refined and employed for illumination, lubrication, and other uses. In the late 1850s, New Haven speculator James Townsend hired Drake to investigate Titusville, Pennsylvania for oil deposits. Diplomat and Prospector Edwin Drake's first career was as a conductor on a brand new, sometimes dangerous conveyance: the railroad. His success launched an Oil Rush and brought the world a new energy source. EDWINDRAKE Oil Drilling Dogged persistence led this man to drill - and drill - and drill, seeking oil deposits. ![]() Finally, you need either the tube of Finish Line Anti-Seize that came with your cranks, or else some grease, but definitely one of the two. The CrMo and the Ti sprocket bolts both require a 7/32″ allen key. GDH BB bolts are 8mm allen, standard flush mount bolts are 7/32″, original hollow flush mount and SS crank bolts are 1/4″, and original and Madera crank bolts require a 9/16″ socket. You will also need a wrench (or spanner for our international readers) to turn that crank tool, a medium sized crescent (adjustable) wrench will do, and the appropriate allen key or socket for the type of bolt you have, as well as for the sprocket bolt. You might need the hammer, so keep it handy, but don’t be eager to use it. If you bought the cranks new, then you should have got one in the box, otherwise, borrow one from a friend, or buy one here, here, or here. Save yourself the headache, get a crank tool. It’s a fairly quick route to voiding your warranty, actually. While it’s possible to just hammer the cranks on, it’s really not a good idea, and we certainly don’t recommend it. First of all, you really need the Profile Crank Install Tool. Remove one of the bearings, add one of the thin flat washers (or a longer tube spacer) and reinstall the bearing.īefore we get started, we’ll need to gather some tools. If it is too short, then the bearings will pinch once you tighten the cranks and the cranks will not spin smoothly. Installing an American BB is pretty much the same as installing a Mid or a Spanish, except the fit is usually not nearly as tight, and you’re pressing aluminum cups into a usually steel frame rather than steel bearings into a steel frame so they’re going to slide easier anyway.īefore you go any further, check your tube spacer- it should be touching both bearings. It’s better to have a tube spacer that’s 1mm too long than it is to have one that’s too short- you might as well not have one there at all in that case, and you need a tube spacer so that the bearings don’t pinch when the cranks are tightened down. When the cup is almost tight, it’s not unusual for the bearings to move outwards slightly- don’t freak out here. Again, wrap the threads with teflon tape if you like, and snug it up. The non-drive side cup is right-hand threaded, so it tightens normally. ![]() Insert the proper tube spacer for the width of your BB shell. The drive side cup has a line around it and is left-hand (reverse) threaded. If you really want to do it right, because you hate hearing your BB creaking, then you should get some teflon tape from the hardware store and wrap the threads of the cups. Ideally, you should clean the threads of the frame, and then give them a light coating of grease. Installing a Euro (English/ISO) BB is pretty simple. You will need a 36mm headset wrench. Do not hit the bearings in the center race- hit the outside edges, starting at the top and working your way around the edges, with the intent of pushing the bearing in as evenly as possible. Do not hit the bearings as hard as you can. If you don’t have access to a bearing press and the vice or C-clamp isn’t working for you, you can get a rubber or wooden mallet and tap the bearings in place. Flip the frame over, insert the gold tube spacer, and then the other bearing. ![]() Using a bearing press: lay the frame flat so the BB is under the press, and place the bearing atop the shell, bring the press down, keeping the frame as square to the table as possible. You might need a friend to help support the frame. In all scenarios, you should first spread a bit of grease on the BB shell where the bearings will sit. You can do it that way, but the bearings can get damaged, your frame can get damaged, and you really should avoid using a hammer on your bike as much as possible, it’s just not the right tool for the job in most cases. The last method is to get a 2×4 and a hammer and bash the bearings into place. You can even use your cranks, if you already have one crank arm installed on the BB spindle. ![]() If you don’t have a bench vice, you can get C-clamps from a hardware store for less than $20 and use them with the wood squares. 8/16/2023 0 Comments Airtable planYou can also save a view for future purposes.
